We can give our warm recommendations to anyone considering going to Kyrgyzstan in general, and with Ecotour in particular! We spent two weeks in some of Ecotour's yurt camps, and it was a highly memorable experience. Ecotour was very flexible and had arranged a programme that suited our wishes perfectly.

Sample the culture and everyday life of the nomads in Kyrgyzstan. You will sleep in yurts, the felt houses of the nomadic herdsmen. You will see felt objects for everyday use being made and you get the opportunity to cook a Kyrgyz meal. You might listen to the songs of children and the music of their traditional music instruments. You can also see how nomads prepare kymyz, the national drink, made of mare’s milk. And if you are lucky you might even see traditional games played on horseback.

Visit the Burana Tower and the petroglyphs (stone carvings from the Scythian period) near Cholpon-Ata. In the capital Bishkek you can experience the organized chaos of shopping at the Osh Bazaar.

In between activities there is still plenty of time to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Tian-Shan Mountains.

Several hikes are included in this programme. Most of the transportation takes place by minibus. On several occasions part of the distance can be done on foot. If, when and how long these hikes will be, is a matter of consulting together. You will have the opportunity to ride horses and you can visit the herdsmen who come with their families to the alpine summer pastures to guard the cattle.

In Bishkek your accommodation is in a small pleasant hotel and on tour you will stay in yurts, B&Bs, and hotels. An English speaking interpreter will accompany you for the whole This journey suits people who are interested in the nomadic way of life and the culture of the Kyrgyz people. For the hikes you need to be in good physical condition. About 3-5 hours walking a day in mountainous terrain should be in your range of possibilities. We expect you to be a little adventurous and happy to forget luxury.


Day 1 Departure from your local airport.

Day 2 Arrival at Manas Airport and transfer to the Umai Hotel in Bishkek. After a rest and a light lunch sightseeing around Bishkek. Stay in hotel.

Day 3 Drive from Bishkek to Cholpon-Ata on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. En route visit to Burana Tower, the remnants of the old Silk Road City that existed in X-XII centuries. Around the tower you find Balbals (gravestones) from between the 6th and 10th centuries. The small museum contains more artifacts collected in this area. Stay in hotel.

Day 4 In Cholpon-Ata it is possible to visit the Archaeological Open Air Museum and to see the petroglyphs (rock drawings made by the Scythes from the 11th to 3rd centuries BC). Then short hike in Semyonovka gorge. (Kyrchyn in Kyrgyz) - Gorge at 2,000m, where part of World Nomad Games took place, and which used to be the gathering point of Kyrgyz tribes in the ancient times. Stop at a SPA with several pools with the water temperature ranging from 43-48 °C. Continue to Taldy-Suu village in Kegen valley where you will stay in the house of a local family.

Day 5 Drive through the San-Tash valley. Visit to San-Tash (the interpreter will tell many legends and stories connected to this place) and hike up to the pass. Then by car drive down the valley and onto Kara-Kyz yurt camp at the edge of a forest. Alt 2,000m. Stay in yurt.

Day 6 Day in Kara-Kyz. Hiking up to the mountains with lots of beautiful flowers and/or if you like a longer hike it is possible to reach a small lake. Stay in yurts.

Day 7 Continue to Jeti-Oguz, a lush valley with striking red sandstone rock formations (including the “Seven Bulls” from which the valley takes it name). Hiking in the area. Along the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul to Sonun yurt camp located in a semi-desert area at the edge of the lake (1,600m). On the way a stop in Skaska, a small valley with strange eroded chalk/limestone hills. Stay in yurt.

Day 8 In the afternoon to the yurt camp Boz-Salkyn in the alpine meadow at 2500 m. The last 7 km you can hike up to the yurt camp. Overnight in yurts.

Day 9 Walk down to the car and drive back to Bokonbaevo to meet a man who hunts with golden eagles. Then onto the yurt camp Temir-Kanat at 2450 m. The last 200m to the yurt camp is on foot or on horseback as it is not accessible for most cars.

Day 10 Day in Temir-Kanat, where you can go horse riding, hiking or maybe learn some Kyrgyz cooking. You can also visit the shepherds living in their yurts in pastures and taste kymyz, fermented mare’s milk, and see how it is made. Stay in yurt.

Day 11 Down to the yurt camp at Tuura-Suu (2,200m). On the way, a stop in Kyzyl-Tuu to see yurt frames and yurt decorations being made. Stay in yurt.

Day 12 Day in Tuura-Suu. Hiking, horse riding, listening to the local children sing folksongs and play traditional musical instruments. Stay in yurts.

Day 13 Leave the yurt camp, hike down along a small river and by minibus to Kara-Suu village. There you will stay with a family of experienced felt-makers. They can show how to make felt carpets.

Day 14 First to Kochkor, the centre of felt-making. There you can visit the bazaar and Altyn-Kol, a cooperative shop where women from the surrounding villages show and sell their products. Continue to Bishkek. In the afternoon visit to Osh market. If sufficient participants, a folklore concert and farewell dinner. Stay in hotel.

Day 15 Transfer to Manas Airport and departure.

The price includes, from arrival at until departure from Manas Airport, everything except flight, visa (if required), insurance, alcoholic and bottled beverages.
